About the School/Dojo

Our Story

In 19__, Sifu or “Master Teacher” James Matthews opened his first school with a vision to empower people by teaching martial arts on a completely different level than could be found anywhere else.

The reputation for combining self-defense and life skills grew. As the word spread, the Kung Fu San Soo opened new locations, garnered awards, earned prestigious industry accolades, and gained national recognition.

Kung Fu San Soo means to be “Skilled in the art of hand to hand combat-Mercenary” in Chinese. And this is exactly what Master James Matthews is all about. So he added PhD Martial Arts to the name to embody the spirit of Self Defense: Indomitable Spirit, Generosity, Experiential, Teamwork, Community, and Growth. Never static, Master Jim and his team continue to innovate and grow the various aspects of PhD Martial Arts to develop its curriculum and outreach.
